Lecture (LEC)
In the first part of this course we will focus in detail on issues related to syllable structure that include syllable weight, moraic structure, sonority, subsyllabic constituency and syllable contact. We will also be introducing Optimality Theory and then consider an optimality-theoretic approach to such issues. We will also consider issues of word prosody that include foot structure, stress, tone, and harmony. Each student will be expected to examine in detail a pertinent topic in a language (or in related languages/dialects) that they know or have studied. Course requirements include a term paper, various presentations, possible homework assignments and possible Canvas discussion board assignments. Article readings will be made available to enrolled students.
