We maintain a vibrant undergraduate program and one of the largest Linguistics graduate programs in the country. In addition to degrees in general Linguistics, undergraduate and graduate students can pursue specific concentrations focused on African languages in Linguistics and Computational Linguistics.

IU's Department of Linguistics is a hub for the amazing tapestry of language and culture programs at Indiana University. More than 70 languages are offered at IU, and our department has developed in collaboration with these programs for more than seventy years.

We pursue research on language in all its facets. Our faculty excel in teaching and research in specific branches of linguistics, including linguistic analysis, language structure, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, comparative linguistics, structural linguistics, and the linguistic study of African languages.
