MidPhon30 is the 30th meeting of this Workshop on Phonological Research, since it started in the 1990s as a joint workshop between Indiana University and Ohio State. The conference has consistently brought together some of the most prominent scholars in phonology and phonetics from around the country. It is called ‘Mid’, because these scholars happen to be working at CIC and neighboring universities. Though local, it’s been one of the world’s most high-powered annual venues in the discipline, and it’s been a model launching point for our graduate students and an important place for our junior faculty to become connected to an international research network.
The program is compacted into a two-day period on October 10 - 11, involving approximately 50 presentations from people within relatively easy driving distance, with a large number of Indiana University students and faculty included. From IU alone, there are 14 faculty members in 7 different departments who have substantial research projects in the area of this conference, so the conference highlights the role of IU linguists in phonological and phonetic research.
