Dr. Monica Nesbitt, Assistant Professor of Linguistics, has received a Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for her project, the Phonological Atlas of African American Language (PAAAL).
The PAAAL project is creating the first-ever digital atlas of African American Language by conducting interviews with African Americans across the United States. In addition to research, Dr. Nesbitt’s team is committed to community engagement and education. They share insights about African American Language and linguistics through their Instagram account, @mappingblacklanguage.
The project is currently recruiting participants! Individuals who identify as African American and are between the ages of 18 and 45 are invited to take part in an interview about language and identity. Participants receive $20 compensation.
