This course is an introduction to phonology, the grammar of sounds of languages. The main goals of the course are to become familiar with the tools - concepts and procedures - for the description and analysis of phonological phenomena, and to learn how to use them. We will work on the development of the analytical and descriptive skills primarily through problem solving. The course will hopefully give you also the taste of the beauty and intricacies of the wide array of phonological systems from different languages. The course will provide training in skills important outside of linguistics: critical thinking, teamwork and collaboration, communication, resourcefulness/self-learning and adaptability.
