Topic: Structure of hungarian
In this course we concentrate on the systematic phonology of Hungarian (including central theoretical topics such as vowel harmony and morphophonemic alternations) and syntax (focusing on word order and configurationality, topic and focus, and the separable verbal prefixes), working through one key monograph in each area. Problems in morphology (epenthetic vowel quality, case inventory, the distinctive system of possessive suffixes) are treated from several independent articles. Grading is based primarily upon two critical reviews of recent research articles selected by students, one on phonology or morphology, the other on syntax. Prior knowledge of Hungarian not required or expected.
