Lecture (LEC)
This course is designed to introduce graduate students to the syntactic analysis of natural language, focusing especially on English but drawing insights from many other languages. The course has three primary goals: (1) to help students gain a basic understanding of sentence structure (2) to introduce students to the strategies of syntactic argumentation and (3) to explore a particular theoretical approach to syntax, Chomsky's Principles and Parameters approach and its most recent development, the Minimalist Program. Doing syntax is a hands-on proposition: students will learn to apply the principles of theoretical syntax directly to data from English and other languages.
