Topic: Constructed languages
This course explores constructed languages (conlangs), which are languages that have been consciously created, such as Esperanto, Dothraki (Game of Thrones), Elvish (Lord of the Rings), or Klingon (Star Trek). Along with learning about the history of conlangs and the background & structure of selected conlangs, students will learn about the key areas of linguistics¿phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, typology, and more¿and apply this knowledge to the creation of their own conlang. Through regular assignments, students will incrementally build their own conlang, and at the end of the course, put it all together to produce a grammatical sketch of their created language.
