Phonetics is a course designed to introduce you to various facets of phonetic investigation. We hope to interact with the basic facts of speech production and speech acoustics as they are relevant to the expression of linguistic structures. Along the way, we hope to develop basic skills for representing speech behavior in light of linguistic investigation. The first part of the course will focus on the segmental analysis of speech, and we will work on your ability to analyze speech by means of the complete IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet). The later part of the course will focus on linguistic effects that the IPA is not good for. All along, we will also be using digital signal processing suites to help you work with acoustic representations and to grasp the complex acoustic properties in the speech signal.
