Field Methods is a hands-on course in which participants explore the grammatical structure of a language that is (ideally) unknown to them. The expectation is that students come to class with no pre-existing knowledge or expectations and discover the language as we proceed. The course is designed to mimic the experience of true field work: that is, we go in with no pre-existing knowledge and slowly build an understanding of the language¿s grammar through elicitation, working with native speakers. At a minimum, we¿ll develop a sense of the target language's phonetics, phonology, morphology, and syntax. In addition, we will discuss practical issues in field work such as glossing conventions and developing a practical orthography. We will also all gain experience in working one-on-one with a speaker and eliciting data.
