We maintain a vibrant undergraduate program and one of the largest Linguistics graduate programs in the country. In addition to degrees in general Linguistics, undergraduate and graduate students can pursue specific concentrations focused on African languages, Second Language Studies, and Computational Linguistics. We also offer an undergraduate TESOL and Second Language Acquisition certificate and both a graduate certificate and M.A. in TESOL and Applied Linguistics.

The learning of second and foreign languages is a rich and fascinating process involving linguistic, psychological, and cultural and social dimensions. We are dedicated to scholarship on the structure, acquisition, and use of nonnative language in both instructed and contact contexts.

English Language Instructional Program (ELIP)
The English Language Instructional Program (ELIP) is beneficial to both undergraduates and graduates who wish to improve their academic English language skills.
Intensive English Program (IEP)
The instructional Intensive English Program (IEP) is designed to help non-native English speakers increase their English language skills. The curriculum is designed for students at all levels of English language proficiency, with an emphasis on developing the necessary oral and written skills for academic studies and business or professional communication.
A curiosity for language
We pursue research on language in all its facets. Our faculty excel in teaching and research in specific branches of linguistics, including linguistic analysis, language structure, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, comparative linguistics, structural linguistics, and the linguistic study of African languages. Our department is home to many active research labs and reading groups.
