In the Fall a crimson wave sweeps Bloomington like ballistics;
In the Fall instructors figure out classroom logistics;
In the Fall the wanton squirrel helps himself to abandoned fish sticks;
In the Fall a student’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of linguistics.

This Fall, linguists returned to the 5th floor of Ballantine North with masks off and spirit gear on. We’re missing recently graduated students (at least the ones who didn’t stick around in town for just a little longer) and looking forward to new adventures (study abroad! NACLO! grad school applications!).
We said “auf wiedersehen” to 22 undergraduate linguists in 2022. Two students earned 2022 Outstanding Senior Awards: Jessica Morris and Collin Steele. Nine students earned Outstanding Undergraduate Achievement Awards: Chloe Adkins, Story Ellis, Riley Grieves, Matthew Luettgen, Jessica Morris, Jacob Owens, Kevin Reidy, Tyler Richardson, and Collin Steele. Jessica Morris, Kevin Reidy, and Collin Steele were inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. These graduates are looking forward to new opportunities that they will seek through gap years, travel, language study and teaching, graduate school, and farming.
As we begin the Fall 2022 semester, there are 90 students majoring in linguistics, including 6 new direct admits to the department, and 23 minors. Many of these students are involved in projects outside of their regular classes. Here are some highlights:
- Matthew Luettgen, Aaryana Rajanala, and Amanda Kessler published a paper with Dr. Kuebler (and colleagues) on conspiracy theories: “How “loco” is the LOCO corpus? Annotating the language of conspiracy theories.”
- Chloe Adkins has been working with Dr. Ann Bunger on a project investigating discourse coherence in patients with aphasia.
- Four students— Rachel Gray, Aaryana Rajanala, Amanda Kessler, and William Ross—have served as undergraduate teaching assistants for linguistics courses this year, working with faculty members and graduate students teaching Introduction to the Study of Language, Language and Computers, and Thinking about Language.
